What is SEO?

As a subcategory of search engine marketing (SEM), SEO is the most important method, alongside SEA, for making websites visible to potential customers via search engines.

SEO is the abbreviation for "Search Engine Optimisation" and means "search engine optimisation". As the name implies, this involves optimising websites to improve their ranking in the search results (= SERPs) on search engines such as Google, Bing and others. A good ranking is important as most users use search engines as a starting point for their internet searches. Your goal as a company must be to pick up potential customers at this early stage of their customer journey and ensure that they end up on your website after entering their search query.

What are the goals of SEO?

As already mentioned, search engine marketing is basically about making your online platform more visible via search engines. The sub-discipline of search engine optimisation pursues this goal via a good search engine ranking in the organic (= non-paid) search results and is designed for long-term success. SEO is not a sprint, SEO is a marathon.

The higher ranking generally results in more reach and therefore increased traffic to your site. More potential customers ultimately increase the likelihood of more conversions and leads and therefore more sales. If you rank high in search engines for relevant keywords, you also increase your brand awareness and can strengthen your branding. A website with excellent technical and content features and a good search engine ranking is also a strong advertisement and creates the basis for further online marketing activities.

How does SEO work?

For successful search engine optimisation, it is crucial to first understand the purpose of search engines. Google and other search engines are designed to display the best and most relevant search results for the search query entered by users. User experience is also the keyword here. Search engine optimisation starts right here to give Google the opportunity to classify your own website as good and relevant for a search query and to give it a top ranking in the search results.

There are a number of different optimisation levers in different areas, all of which contribute to increasing the so-called "SEO score" of your website. Basically, all SEO measures can be divided into two areas: onsite optimisation and offsite optimisation. Onsite optimisation includes all measures ON your own website, while offsite optimisation includes all measures OFF your own website.

Onsite optimisation

The area of on-page optimization includes all technical and content-related improvements. Technical improvements include settings for page indexing, page speed, URL structure, canonicals and server redirects. The optimization of content includes starting points such as the quality and length of texts, suitable keywords or title tags and meta descriptions. The decisive criterion for successful on-page optimization is to structure your website in a search engine and user-friendly way and to fill it with content that offers users added value.

 

Off-page optimisation

Off-page optimisation includes what is known as link building. On the one hand, this involves obtaining as many good links as possible from external websites to your own - the so-called "backlinks". If a website is recommended by other websites and linked accordingly, it must be of a corresponding quality and high value, which is perceived and evaluated positively by search engines. In addition, outgoing links from your own website to external websites also have a positive effect if they provide further relevant information for users. Building a link network not only has a positive effect on search engine rankings, but also helps to increase brand awareness and attract visitors from external websites to your own site.
